Can you Vision Zero? Hawaiʻi Department of Health initiative developed in response to devastating impacts of tragic traffic deaths and raise awareness about how residents with shared vision to stop them can help.

Hawaiian Electric crews will be replacing utility poles overnight July 10-11 between Waiaha Road and Water Pipe Road as well as near Helani Congregational Church.

Scheduled to begin July 8, the project at the Hilo park is aimed at enhancing public safety in the park by addressing trees that pose immediate risk and require removal or significant canopy reduction.

“This plan is the catalyst for creating a future that all people can thrive in,” said Hawaiʻi Youth Transportation Council Member Kawika Pegram. “Through this plan, we can harness the power of local industry, create meaningful jobs and invest in public infrastructure like never before.”

As more Hawaiʻi drivers choose more fuel-efficient hybrid or all-electric vehicles, revenues from motor fuel taxes and other vehicle registration fees have declined, resulting in less funding to maintain the state’s roads, bridges and infrastructure. The road usage charge is a step to ensure long-term, sustainable funding for transportation.

A total of 449 drivers have been arrested for DUI on Big Island roadways so far this year, a decrease of 3.23% compared with the 464 police took into custody within the same time period in 2024.

Hawai‘i Island police identified the man as Terry Lytle. The investigation into the incident in which Lytle was injured also has been reclassified from a negligent injury to a negligent homicide.

The project at the beach park just off Puhi Bay, between Chalk’s Beach and Hilo Yacht Club, in the Hilo coastal community is aimed at addressing concerns raised during a recent community meeting and includes repaving the park’s upper parking lot as well as its main entry road.

There have been 432 DUI arrests so far this year on Big Island roadways, a 3.79% decrease compared with the 449 made during the same period in 2024. Hawai‘i Police Department reports DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating after receiving multiple reports about a parking enforcement device known as “The Barnacle” being placed on vehicle windshields at the top of Napoʻopoʻo Road.

Convoy activity began May 18 and will continue daily through the end of this week from Kawaihae Harbor to Pōhakuloa Training Area within the window of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as Guard prepares for annual training exercises.
