ADVISORY: Increased pedestrian activity expected during BLOOM – EMPRESS 5K, Lei Day x BLOOM event
Organizers advise the public to expect increased pedestrian and traffic activity the evening of Saturday, May 2, in Kona because of the scheduled BLOOM – EMPRESS 5K and Lei Day x BLOOM celebration in conjunction with Kona Town Night Market at The Brew Block.
“We are sharing this notice in advance to help keep both runners and motorists safe, while also informing nearby businesses, residents and visitors of increased pedestrian activity throughout the evening,” said organizers in a release about the event.
Event and course activity
- About 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. SATURDAY, May 2
- Areas of increased runner and pedestrian traffic:
- Pāwai Place
- Kaiwi Street
- Kuakini Highway to former runway at Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area
The community can expect:
- Increased foot traffic and race participants along the course.
- Temporary traffic slowdowns in select areas.
- Course guides and safety personnel stationed along the route.
- Hawai‘i Police Department officers and traffic support at key areas.
Motorists are asked to:
- Drive slowly and attentively near the course.
- Follow any posted signage and traffic personnel instructions.
- Use extra caution when approaching intersections and pedestrian crossings.
- Allow additional travel time during event hours.
Businesses along the route are encouraged to share this information with staff and customers to help ensure a smooth and safe evening for everyone.
BLOOM – EMPRESS 5K is a women-centered community fun run celebrating movement, culture, music and wāhine empowerment alongside Kona Town Night Market.
