Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation reports construction is planned for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday, April 30-May 1. The work will require single-lane closures, with alternating traffic routed through the open lane.

“The speed humps and speed table will improve safety through the corridor by providing a physical reminder to motorists of their vehicle speed and are designed to be safely traversable at the posted speed limit,” said the state Transportation Department in its notification.

Eight traffic crashes happened during the past 5 years — resulting in one fatality and nine people injured — in the area where the speed reduction tools will be installed.

There will be a total of 24 raised crosswalks, speed tables and speed humps on state routes on Hawai‘i Island following the Honalo installations.

Work is weather permitting, and the schedule can change with little to no notice.
