That portion of the Kona roadway was previously closed April 4 because of a downed utility pole and electrical lines that resulted from an early morning traffic crash.

Total of nearly 190 DUI arrests made on Big Island roadways so far this year

There have been 186 DUI arrests on the island in 2025, an increase of nearly 3% from the 181 motorists arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant by the same time in 2024. Another 15 drivers, including 6 who were not even legally old enough to drink, were arrested the week of March 3-9.

24 motorists arrested for DUI during week of Feb. 3-9 on Big Island

Police have made 106 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant so far this year as of Feb. 9. That’s only 5 less, or a 4.5% decrease, from last year’s 111 DUI arrests during the same time period.

83-year-old Minnesota visitor critically injured in Hilo traffic crash

The collision happened at about 2 p.m. Monday. Police report that a Dodge Ram was turning left onto Kapi‘olani Street from Ponahawai Street when it struck the elderly Minnesota man while he was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.

More than 20 DUI arrests made during 2nd week of 2025 on Big Island roads

23 motorists were arrested for DUI throughout the week of Jan. 6-12, nearly twice as many than were arrested the first week of 2025. There had been a total of 35 DUI arrests made by Jan. 12 in 2025, a 20.7% increase from the 29 by the same date in 2024.

12 motorists arrested for DUI during week of Jan. 1-5 on Big Island roads

DUI arrests increased nearly 1% overall throughout all of 2024 on the Big Island, with 964 compared with 955 from the year before. The number of drivers arrested for DUI involved in traffice crashes and those younger than 21 also increased.
