DOCARE officers have opened an investigation into the hit and run that killed a 12-year old nēnē in the popular Hilo park on Thursday morning.

Of the 59 fatalities this year, 12 reports listed excessive speeding as the primary factor, eight cited suspected impairment and additional reckless driving behaviors such as not wearing a helmet, and seven listed multiple contributing factors such as speed, reckless driving, and inattention.

The single-vehicle collision occurred on the evening of Dec. 28, on Kilauea Avenue near the intersection with Mohouli Street in Hilo.
