22 drivers arrested for DUI during week of Feb. 23 through March 1 on Big Island roadways
The crackdown on motorists who choose to drive under the influence of an intoxicant continues on Big Island roadways, with police arresting 22 drivers for DUI during the week of Feb. 23 through March 1.
Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; none were younger than 21 years old.
There have been 135 DUI arrests so far this year, a 19.16% decrease from the 167 DUI arrests by the same time last year.
DUI arrests were made in every district around the island during the week, except North Hilo and North Kohala. Kona had the most with 13, significantly more than second place Puna that had 3. Hilo and Kaʻū rounded out the top with 2 DUI arrests each.

Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crash records and discovered 173 major crashes so far this year, a 6.79% increase from the 162 major crashes on Big Island roadways by the same time in 2025.
There were four fatal crashes — a decrease of 42.86% from seven last year — resulting in four fatalities — a 50% decrease from eight in 2025 — as of March 1.
The non-traffic fatality count — those not on a public roadway — remains at zero for the year, the same as it was last year.
Police report DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
