Paving project starts this week, covering nearly 2 miles of Kāwili Street in Hilo

Hawaiʻi County Department of Public Works notifies the public that paving work starts Monday (Feb. 2) on Kāwili Street in Hilo.

The project will occur in phases — between Kanoelehua Avenue and Pūʻainakō Street — and cover about 1.6 miles.

Motorists should make appropriate arrangements and plan ahead for lane closures and temporary traffic adjustments on Kāwili Street during the paving project.

All work will take place from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday, weather permitting. Paving is expected to be completed by the end of February.

Kāwili Street lane closures and temporary traffic adjustments

Between Kanoelehua Avenue and Manono Street

• Dates: Feb. 2-6
• Traffic impact: Single-lane closures

Between Lanikaula Street and Kīlauea Avenue

• Dates: Feb.9-10
• Traffic impact: Single-lane closures

Between Kīlauea Avenue and Kinoʻole Street

• Dates: Feb. 11
• Traffic impact: All lanes closed

Between Kinoʻole Street and Kapiʻolani Street

• Dates: Feb. 12-13
• Traffic impact: Single-lane closures, including intersection

Between Kapiʻolani Street and University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo middle entrance

• Dates: Feb. 17-20
• Traffic impact: Single-lane closures

Between University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo middle entrance and Pūʻainakō Street

• Dates: Feb. 23-27
• Traffic impact: Single-lane closures

Drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes, allow for extra travel time if they must drive through the work area and follow all posted signs and directions from flaggers.

“The county thanks the public for their patience and cooperation during this important road improvement project,” said a Hawai‘i County release about the scheduled project.
