5 motorists arrested for DUI during last days of 2025 on Big Island; year ends with total of 899
Hawai‘i Police Department reports that just five motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the last few days of 2025, from Dec. 29-31, on Big Island roadways.
One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash.
Year-end DUI and crash statistics for 2025
There were a total of 899 DUI arrests in 2025. That was a 6.74% decrease compared with the 964 DUI arrests made in 2024.
The number of arrests by district is below, including a breakdown of the last few in 2025 from Dec. 29-31 and annual totals:

A review by Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section of all updated crashes revealed a total of 1,009 major crashes last year, or a slight increase of 1.92%, compared with 990 major crashes in 2024.
The island saw a total of 19 fatal crashes that resulted in 21 fatalities in 2025.
Those numbers represent a 26.62% decrease from the 26 fatal crashes and 27.59% decrease from the 29 fatalities suffered in 2024 on Big Island roadways.
The 2025 non-traffic fatality count — those not on a public roadway — remained at zero by the end of the year, the same amount as the prior year.
Police report that DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
