Police arrest 16 motorists for driving under the influence during week of Dec. 15-21

Hawai‘i Island police arrested 16 motorists the week of Dec. 15-21 for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; none were younger than 21 years old.

There have been 883 DUI arrests so far in 2025, a 5.96% decrease compared with 939 during the same period last year.

Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 977 major crashes so far this year. That’s an increase of 1.45% compared with 963 major crashes during the same time period in 2024.

To date, there have been 19 fatal crashes to date on Big Island roadways, resulting in 21 fatalities compared with 25 fatal crashes, resulting in 28 fatalities during the same time period in 2024.

There still have been zero non-traffic fatalities — those that are not on a public roadway — this year, the same as 2024.

Police report that DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
