17 motorists arrested for DUI during week of Dec. 8-14 on Big Island

Hawai‘i Island police continue their crackdown on those who drive impaired, arresting 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of Dec. 8-14.

Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; five were younger than 21 years old.

There have been 866 DUI arrests made so far this year on the Big Island, a 5.66% decrease compared with the 918 arrests made during the same period last year.

Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 955 major crashes so far this year. That represents a 1.17% increase compared with the 944 major crashes reported during the same time last year.

There have been 18 fatal crashes to date on the island, a decrease of 28% from the 25 fatal crashes at this point last year. Those fatal crashes resulted in 20 fatalities this year, which is a 28.57% decrease from the 28 fatalities in last year’s fatal crashes within the same period.

The non-traffic fatality count so far this year remains at 0 — the same amount as last year during the same time period.

Big Island police report DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
