UPDATE: Brown water advisory lifted for Hilo Bay, Hāmākua Coast 22 days after issued
Update at 4:07 p.m. Dec. 2, 2025: Hawaiʻi Department of Health reports that the brown water advisory for Hilo Bay and along the Hāmākua Coast on the east side of Hawai‘i Island is canceled.
The advisory was first issued 22 days ago on Nov. 10 because of high surf and heavy rains resulting in stormwater runoff entering coastal waters of the bay and coast.
Original story posted Nov. 10, 2025: High surf and recent heavy rain have resulted in stormwater runoff entering coastal waters in Hilo Bay and along the coast of Hāmākua.
The public is advised to avoid floodwaters and stormwater runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewage, manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals, and associated flood debris.
Not all coastal areas may be impacted by runoff; however, if the water is brown, officials warn the public to stay out and practice good hygiene.
If there are health concerns following time in the water, officials suggest following up with a primary care physician.
