A historic University of Hawai‘i at Hilo men’s soccer season continues later this week as the Vulcans enter the NCAA postseason for the first time in program history.

The Vulcans were seeded No. 9 in the NCAA Super 4 Region and will face off against eighth-seeded Western Oregon University at 11 a.m. Friday (Nov. 21) at Stanislaus State’s Warrior Stadium in Turlock, Calif.

Pacific West Conference tournament runner-up University of Hawai‘i at Hilo was one of five teams to land an at-large bid for the NCAA postseason, following the five conference champions from the PacWest, California Collegiate Athletic Association, Great Northeast Athletic Conference, Lone Star Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference that make up the Super 4 Region.

The winner of Friday’s matchup will take on regional bracket host Stanislaus State at 1 p.m. Nov. 23.

The Vulcans and Western Oregon met earlier this fall at the beginning of September, with the Wolves managing a 3-1 victory at the tail end of University of Hawai’i at Hilo’s season-opening road trip.

Western Oregon — in just its fourth season of having a men’s soccer program — claimed back-to-back conference titles after defeating Seattle Pacific in double overtime of this past weekend’s inaugural Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships postseason tournament.

The Wolves earned seven All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference Team selections along with Player of the Year (Yahir Ocampo Navarro) and Co-Defensive Player of the Year (Harper Neubeck) honors.

The Vulcans qualified for the PacWest Championships postseason tournament for the second consecutive season under third-year head coach Diego Marroquin, falling to Point Loma Nazarene University in the title match Nov. 15.
