Update: Endangered 13-year-old runaway located in good health

Update at 7:36 a.m. Oct. 20: Hawai‘i Island police report that 13-year-old Johnessa Elkin-Kanae, who was previously reported as an endangered runaway, was located at 7:11 p.m. Oct. 19 in good health.

The young teen had been missing for more than a day by the time she was located.

Original post at 4:17 a.m. Oct. 19, 2025: Hawai‘i Island police are asking if anyone knows the whereabouts of 13-year-old runaway Johnessa Elkin-Kanae, who was last seen the afternoon of Oct. 18.

She is also considered endangered because of her age.

Johnessa is 5-foot-2, 120 pounds, white, with brown eyes and shoulder-length curly black hair.

She was last seen at 1:30 p.m. Friday on ʻIo Kea Road in Hawaiian Acres, wearing white pants and a dark-colored shirt.

Anyone who can help safely locate Johnessa should call police immediately at 9-1-1 or the Hawai‘i Police Department non-emergency line at 808-935-3311.
