A 10% water conservation notice for customers in the Hakalau area of East Hawai‘i is in effect until further notice.

Customers affected include those along:

  • Hawai‘i Belt Road, between the 14 and 15.5-mile markers.
  • Māmalahoa Highway (Highway 19).
  • Chin Chuck Road.
  • Hanamalo Loop.
  • Any side roads and lanes.

Hawai‘i County Department of Water Supply says the request for customers in the affected area to reduce their water usage by 10% comes because of a prolonged lack of rainfall and significant reduction in spring flows.

The department also offered these conservation tips:

  • Wash only full loads of laundry and dishes.
  • Check faucets and pipes for leak.
  • Do not let water run when washing hands, shaving or brushing teet.
  • Reduce showering times.
