83-year-old Minnesota visitor critically injured in Hilo traffic crash
An 83-year-old man visiting the island from Minnesota is in critical condition after being struck by a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 truck the afternoon of Feb. 10 in the intersection of Ponahawai and Kapi‘olani streets in Hilo.
The visitor was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center for treatment and subsequently transported to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.
A 30-year-old Hilo man who was driving the Dodge truck was uninjured.
Hawai‘i Police Department initiated a negligent injury probe into the collision. The department’s East Hawai‘i Traffic Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and continues to investigate.
Police do not think impairment or speed were factors in the crash.
The collision happened at about 2 p.m. Monday. Police report that the Dodge Ram was turning left onto Kapi‘olani Street from Ponahawai Street when it struck the elderly Minnesota man while he was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.
