Update: High surf advisory extended for east-facing shores of Big Island

Update at 4:20 a.m. Feb. 5: The moderate north-northeast swell will hold again today then gradually diminish this evening, with another moderate reinforcing northeast swell forecast to fill in late tonight through Thursday.

National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu extended the high surf advisory in effect for east-facing shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. today, with surf up to 12 feet expected to continue.

Strong breaking waves and strong currents along the eastern shoreline of the island will make swimming and likely some other ocean activities dangerous.

The public is again advised to heed all advice from ocean safety officials, and when in doubt, don’t go out.

A high surf advisory for north-facing shores that was supposed to be in effect until 6 a.m. today was canceled after surf along northern coastlines fell below the advisory threshold.

Update at 3:51 p.m. Feb. 4: A reinforcing moderate north-northeast swell is holding and will continue to do so tonight before gradually diminishing through the rest of the week, with possible moderate reinforcing northeast swell moving in by about Thursday.

The new surf forecast led the National Weather Service in Honolulu to again extend a high surf advisory for north-facing shores of the Big Island until 6 a.m. Feb. 5. It also now includes eastern shores of the island.

Surf of 10 to 15 feet is forecast along north-facing shores and 7 to 10 feet for east shorelines, causing strong breaking waves and strong currents that will make swimming and other ocean activities dangerous.

The public is urged to heed all advice from ocean safety officials and remember: when in doubt, don’t go out.

As a result, the National Weather Service in Honolulu extended the high surf advisory in effect for north-facing shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. today.

Surf of 10 to 16 feet is forecast along those shorelines, causing large, strong breaking waves and strong currents that will make swimming and other ocean activities dangerous.
