First responders found no injuries and no obvious cause from a fire in Hilo on New Year’s Eve

No injuries were reported from a structure fire in the Kaūmana neighborhood of Hilo after midnight on New Yearʻs Eve.

Hawaiʻi County firefighters from Station 4 Kaūmana responded to the fire on Hokulani Street at 1:50 a.m. on Jan. 1. When they arrived at the scene, two occupants were outside as heavy smoke and flames were coming from the rear of the structure. 

According to the incident report, the fire was confined to the back lanai, kitchen and rear bedroom of the residence. There was no fire damage noted on neighboring structures.

Firefighters quickly got the blaze under control and put the fire out in 30 minutes.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The damage is estimated at $498,500.
