Police Arrest 15 Big Island Motorists for DUI

During the week of Jan. 3-9, Hawai`i Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. None of the drivers were younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 24 DUI arrests compared with 43 during the same period last year, a decrease of 44.2%.

There have been 18 major accidents so far this year compared with 16 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.5%.

To date, there have been two fatal crashes, resulting in two fatalities, compared with one fatal crash, resulting in one fatality, for the same time frame last year. That represents an increase of 100% for fatal crashes and 100% for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
