Continued work on the repaving of an exit trail at Thurston Lava Tube within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park will cause the exit trail to remain closed for an additional week.
HVNP officials say that the repaving work is being done following the replacement of an old electrical line. The lava tube will remain open and that the trail leading into the tube will also act as the temporary exit trail.
The paving project will be completed by Aug. 21 and will include the repair of the entire exit trail, which is about 700 feet.
Restrooms are still open but the Escape Road will remain closed.
