Beginning on Monday, Aug. 3, the exit route trail leading out of the Thurston Lava Tube, located within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, will close as an electrical line that feeds power to the lava tube’s lighting system is replaced

Jessica Ferracane, HVNP spokeswoman, says the new lines being installed will replace the old lines that were ready to retire.

During the electrical work, the closed area will extend from the “far end” of the lava tube and up to the restrooms.

Visitors to the lava tube will be re-rerouted back through the trail that leads into the tube.

Ferracane confirmed that the lights inside the lava tube will remain on, as a temporary line has already been put in place to ensure light to the tube.

In addition to the closure of the exit trail, HVNP officials will close the Escape Road, which runs from Highway 11 to Thurston Lava Tube.

Restroom facilities will remain open and the full trail will re-open on Aug. 14.
