Puna Man Indicted for Attempted Murder in 2013 Case

A 32-year-old Puna man has been indicted by a grand jury for attempted murder in connection with an incident that occurred in 2013.

Gilbert H. Waiau of Pahoa was arrested Monday morning on a bench warrant charging him with attempted second-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault, terroristic threatening and criminal property damage.

The indictment stems from an incident that occurred in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision on April 30, 2013, in which officers responded to a report of a possible domestic dispute.

The victim, a 23-year-old woman, told police that Waiau had followed her on Kahakai Boulevard to Puni Mauka Loop, where he allegedly tried to run her car off the road, then rammed her car with his.

When she got out of her vehicle, Waiau allegedly attempted to hit her with his car.

The case was routed to county prosecutors who presented it to a grand jury.

Waiau was being held in lieu of $85,000 bail.
