Kona Low eases drought conditions on Big Island, but only in the short term
Areas of extreme drought were eliminated thanks to the rainfall brought by the storm but most of the island continues to suffer from moderate drought, with severe drought still affecting areas in the interior and along a portion of the northwest coastline.

Beginning Feb. 16 in East Hawai’i, back-to-back Kona Lows followed by persistent showers ushered in by returning trade winds drenched places from Honomū to Pāhala, but the rain finally stopped long enough on Saturday to give the saturated ground a chance to dry out a little, at least in Hilo.
December rainfall totals vary from mostly above to mostly below average
The U.S. Geological Survey’s rain gauge at Kawainui Stream had the highest monthly total of 15.03 inches, or 112% of average, and the highest daily total of 9.23 inches on Dec. 19.
