The Hawaiʻi Island Food Basket raised nearly $40,000 during its annual Feed-a-Thon event last week, which collects money and food for the local charity.

Kaiser Permanente Hawai‘i has awarded grants totaling $122,100 to three vital community organizations, including the Food Basket of Hawai‘i on the Big Island.

The Food Basket is helping between 40,000 and 50,000 people a month with food needs through its various services, including the ‘Ohana Food Drops that have become familiar events around the island.

Hawai‘i Police Department is teaming up with The Food Basket Inc. and Costco for the first annual Fill A Cruiser Food Drive event Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kona Costco.

The groups will accept both canned food and monetary donations.

Hawai‘i Community College (Hawai‘i CC) has donated $2,000 to the Food Basket, Inc.

Supporters are asked to drop off non-perishable items including canned goods, rice, and any other packaged food materials.

Beginning June 24, the program will be expanding to a total of 30 participating grocery stores statewide.

Motorists should be aware of the potential for traffic congestion near the food distribution sites before and during the drop-off events.

The Food Basket’s food drops are a healthy box of groceries including fresh local produce.

For the past 20 years, Tommy “Kahikina” Ching has been hosting an islandwide food drive to help the Food Basket during the off holiday-season months.

The Food Basket, Inc.’s upcoming golf tournament in Hilo will raise funds to end hunger in Hawai`i County.
