EPA grants $1.5 million to Hawaiʻi County to expand recycling in Hilo
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Wednesday it has awarded $2.2 million in grants to Hawaiʻi for a recycling project in Hilo and a study of waste management across several islands.
Police investigating Hilo traffic fatality due to medical emergency
Police investigators determined that a 2012 Toyota Highlander was traveling east on West Kawili Street and made a left onto Kapiolani Street at the intersection. The vehicle continued into the right-hand shoulder of Kapiolani Street and proceeded through a chain-link fence, coming to rest within an active construction area. There were no signs of braking and no other vehicles were involved.
Kīlauea daily update: Lava fountains at heights of 32 feet
The roughly east-west trending erupting vents within the Kīlauea caldera now span approximately a half mile — down from about 1 mile — as of this morning and have lava fountain heights of up to about 32 feet.
Police charge Hilo man in criminal property investigation

Also in August, authorities made six fentanyl-related arrests and confiscated 36 fentanyl pills. No arrests were made and no pills were recovered in East Hawai‘i.
Paul Scolari selected as superintendent of Kaloko-Honokōhau and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Parks
Scolari is a 29-year veteran of the National Park Service and has worked at numerous parks, including completing a six-month detail as acting superintendent of War in the Pacific National Historical Park and American Memorial Park in Guam and Saipan. He most recently served as superintendent of Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado and Utah.

Daniel James Lemaire, 42, appeared before Judge Kimberly Taniyama on Monday where she reduced his bail from $288,250 to $10,000 over the prosecutor’s objection. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.

The grant was awarded from the U.S. National Science Foundation to a consortium of Pacific Island institutions of higher education.
