A former resident of Puna was in police custody today following an armed carjacking reported to have taken place Wednesday night in the parking lot of the Target store in Hilo.

A Hilo man, 24, told police he was about to get into his late-model Hyundai sedan at about 6:30 p.m. when he was accosted by a man brandishing a weapon.

The assailant took the vehicle’s keys and then drove out of the parking lot.

The Hilo man was not injured.

Following the issuing of an island-wide bulletin, the vehicle was located late last night in the Pohoiki area of Puna.

Police said a 19-year-old man who previously lived in Mountain View was taken into custody.

A 14-year-old girl with the man was interviewed by detectives and released to her parents.

Police have initiated first-degree robbery and car theft cases and are reviewing video surveillance images obtained from the store.

Police ask that anyone with information on the case contact Det. Clarence Davies III at 961-2384 or [email protected].
