Hilo Woman Struck by Car While Crossing Downtown Street
Police said a 61-year-old woman sustained fatal injuries when she was struck by a car Tuesday night while crossing a downtown Hilo street.
Police said the Hilo resident was crossing Kamehameha Avenue just south of the Kalakaua Street intersection shortly before 9 p.m. when she was struck by a south-bound 1998 Honda sedan. The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk, police said.
The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center where she died at 3:55 a.m. today.
Neither the driver of the vehicle, a 35-year-old Hilo woman, nor her passengers were injured.
Police do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.
A negligent homicide investigation has been initiated.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

This was the 19th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to 14 at this time last year.
