UPDATE: Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle in Hilo
Updated 5 p.m. with victim’s identity
A 53-year-old Hilo woman died Saturday, March 16 from injuries she
received in a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Route 19) and Pukihae Street in Hilo.
The woman was reportedly on the mauka side of the road’s shoulder near the crosswalk when she was hit by a 2005 Kia four-door sedan.
A 37-year-old Volcano man and his 3-year-old son were traveling south at the time of the collision.
Police responded to a 9:38 pm call alerting them to the accident, finding the driver and his 3-year-old passenger uninjured.
The pedestrian was transported to the Hilo Medical Center by Fire Rescue personnel, where she died at 11:58 p.m.
Officers from the Traffic Enforcement Unit have initiated a negligent homicide investigation. It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the woman’s death.
Update: Police have identified the victim as Pamela G. Wilson of Hilo.
Police are asking that anyone who was following the Kia into Hilo, or who may have information on the incident to call Officer Paul Kim at 333-9708.
This is the 10th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year.
