State’s Oldest Resident Dies in Hilo at 108

A Big Island woman believed to be the oldest person in the state has died at the age of 108.

Take Yazaki was born in Japan on Nov. 15, 1903, and moved to the Big Island when she was 10, Hawaii News Now reported.

She is reportedly a descendent of the Japanese emperor Bidatsu.

Yasaki retired as a housekeeper at the Palm Terrace Hotel on Puueo Street, now known as the Wild Ginger Inn.

Yazaki died Sunday at Life Care Center of Hilo. According to Dodo Mortuary, she is survived by two sons and a daughter, 13 grandchildren and “numerous” great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held.

The state’s oldest living person is now believed to be Florence Kamei of Lihue, Kauai, who turned 108 last week, Hawaii News Now said.
