Because of the US Navy’s Rim of the Pacific exercise, also known as RIMPAC, Big Island residents may be hearing increased aircraft noise over the Pohakuloa Training Area, a military spokesman said today.

Navy aircraft began training over the US Army facility on Saddle Road on Sunday, said PTA Public Affairs Officer Bob McElroy. The training will continue for a week.

RIMPAC officially begins Friday and will run through Aug. 3. Additional training flights involving both Navy and Air Force aircraft will be held July 7-9.

Noise abatement complaints can be directed to the RIMPAC Command Bureau at 808-472-0239. More information on the training is available at the exercise’s website at http://www.cpf.navy.mil/rimpac.
