Hawai‘i Island police are investigating a terroristic threatening incident involving a claim of gun shots being fired Friday afternoon at Kealakehe High School in Kona.

At 2:43 p.m., police dispatch received a call from a man who reported that his brother had called him from the high school and said: “Boys are outside the school with a gun.”

Multiple police units responded, with the school going into lockdown at 2:53 p.m.

Dispatch received a second call from a woman identifying herself as a teacher from the school. She reported hearing six gunshots.

Officers created a perimeter and methodically searched and cleared each building on campus. School personnel interviewed on scene did not report hearing gunshots, seeing injured individuals or observing suspicious persons on campus.

Police completed a search of the campus shortly before 4 p.m. The school lifted the lockdown and dismissed students.

Police remained on campus until students were picked up.

The Area II Juvenile Aid Section is continuing this investigation, including efforts to identify the initial caller.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call Detective Wyatt Kaili-Leong at (808) 326-4646, extension 3303, or via email at Wyatt.Kaili-Leong@hawaiipolice.gov.

Police take threats of violence extremely seriously, especially those directed towards students and schools. The Hawai‘i Police Department would like to thank parents and other community members for their patience and understanding as police conducted checks of the school to ensure safety of the students, faculty, and staff.
