Big Island police arrest 18 motorists for DUI week of Aug. 31-Sept. 6
Hawai’i Island police during the week of Aug. 31-Sept. 6 continued their crackdown on people who choose to drink and drive on island roadways.
Police arrested 18 motorists for DUI, with 6 of the drivers involved in traffic crashes and 2 younger than 21 years old.
There have been 539 DUI arrests so far this year compared with 609 during the same period last year, representing a decrease of 11.49%.

Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crash records and found a total of 686 major crashes so far this year, a 2.7% decrease compared with 705 during the same time last year.
As of September 6, There were 22 fatal crashes resulting in 24 fatalities as of Sept. 6 on the Big Island compared with 15 fatal crashes resulting in 16 fatalities during the same time last year, representing a 46.67% increase for fatal crashes and 50% increase for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
