53-year-old in critical condition after crashing his motorcycle in Pāhoa
A 53-year-old man suffered critical injuries after crashing his motorcycle while traveling south on Highway 137 in Pāhoa on Saturday afternoon, the Hawaiʻi Island police said.
The single-vehicle traffic collision occurred in the area of the 14-mile marker of the highway.
Police responded at 1:48 p.m. on Saturday and determined that the operator of the 2004 Honda Shadow motorcycle lost control and veered off the roadway. The operator was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center and then medevacked to Queen’s Medical Center on O’ahu.
At this time, police believe that speed, alcohol and/or drugs are factors in the crash. The operator was not wearing a helmet.
He was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, driving a motor vehicle with no driver’s license, reckless driving and having no motor vehicle insurance policy.
The male was released pending investigation because he was admitted to the hospital due to the severity of his injuries. Police did not identify the motorcycle operator.
The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and is continuing the investigation.
