Hawai‘i Department of Transportation statewide stream cleanups roundup: Hawai‘i Island

Hawai‘i Department of Transportation notifies the public about statewide stream cleanup work to clear accumulation of debris, sediment and brush in an effort to improve drainage and waterflow through stream systems to prevent future flooding.

Streams throughout the state system were prioritized by those deemed most impactful to flooding conditions during storm events.

Coordination with county officials has been an integral part of completing work to its full extent to clear drainage and waterways, which will prevent flooding events like that seen during the kona low storms this spring.

HAWAI‘I ISLAND DISTRICT

• Work on Kāwā Flats in Nāʻālehu is in the design process as pre-emptive surveying and hydrological work is being completed. Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is working to obtain county right-of-entry to begin this work. The estimated completion date is August 2028.

No other streams or waterways have been identified for clearing at this time on Hawai‘i Island.

Funding for stream mitigation is provided through a $9.5 million allocation from the state’s Major Disaster Fund as authorized by Hawai‘i Gov. Josh Green and Hawai’i Legislature. 

All work excludes weekends and holidays, weather permitting. Schedules and completion dates are subject to change.

Special duty police officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control and safety procedures. Electronic message boards also will be posted to notify motorists about any planned closures.
