High surf advisory issued tonight through Friday morning

Forecasters with the National Weather Service have issued a high surf advisory for south-facing shores of the Hawaiian Islands, beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13.

A long-period south swell is expected to fill in tonight, peaking Thursday at advisory levels, and may linger through Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, surf is predicted to build to 8 to 12 feet by Thursday, which will have a moderate impact. Strong breaking waves and currents will make swimming dangerous.

The high surf advisory remains in place until 6 a.m. Friday and is not related to the incoming tropical storm located southeast of the islands.

The Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency urges beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers to heed all advice from ocean safety officials and exercise caution when entering the water.
