Funding for Keaukaha gym renovations secured after years of dilapidation, deferred maintenance

After years of disrepair, funding has been released for the renovations and modernization of Kawānanakoa Gym in Hilo.
On Friday, state Sen. Lorraine Inouye thanked Gov. Josh Green for committing $3.5 million to finance the construction phase of the long-awaited renovations at the only gym in Keaukaha.
Kawānanakoa Gym has long served as an important gathering place for recreation, youth programs, athletic events, and community activities in Hilo. The planned renovations will help preserve the facility while enhancing its functionality, safety, and accessibility to better serve the community’s needs.
“It’s exciting for the people in the community, who have long needed the use of a modernized and upgraded facility,” Inouye said. “I am also pleased that Hawaiʻi County and the State Legislature have partnered and collaborated to secure the funding necessary to complete the full scope of work, including significant repairs and improvements.”
The project is currently in the design phase, anticipated to be completed by the end of 2026. Construction is expected to begin at the end of 2027, with the renovated Kawānanakoa Gym to be completed by the end of 2028.
