McBride joins Vulcans sports medicine staff

Athletic trainer Chris McBride is the newest member of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Athletics Sports Medicine staff.

McBride has more than a decade of athletic training experience in professional hockey and collegiate athletics.

“I’m excited for this opportunity to join Hawai‘i Hilo Athletics,” said McBride in a university release. “I want to thank the sports medicine staff and Vulcans Athletics department for welcoming me in. I’m looking forward to working with the student-athletes and coaches and continuing to grow as part of the staff.”

McBride most recently served as an athletic trainer with Hawai‘i Pacific University from 2021 to this year on O‘ahu. Prior to coming to Hawai‘i, he worked from 2015 to 2020 in California with professional ice hockey team and LA Kings American Hockey League affiliate the Ontario Reign.

McBride earned a bachelor’s in kinesiology–exercise science in 2012 from California State University, Northridge and a master’s in athletic training in 2015 from California Baptist University.

“Chris is a great addition to our sports medicine staff,” said Vulcans chief athletic trainer Kensei Gibbs in the university release. “He brings a wealth of experience from both the professional and collegiate levels, and his background will be a great asset to our student-athletes and coaches as we continue to grow the department.”

McBride joins Gibbs and Kelsie Espiritu-Tanabe as the staff’s third athletic trainer.
