Parts of Hilo, Nāʻālehu highways to be closed July 4 to accommodate holiday celebrations

Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation announces parts of two Big Island highways will be temporarily closed this weekend for Fourth of July celebrations.

A portion of Bayfront Highway, or Highway 11, in Hilo will be closed several hours July 4 for the Hilo Bay Blast.

The roadway will be completely closed from 6 to 10 p.m. between the Pauahi Street intersection and Wailuku Bridge, also known as Singing Bridge. Motorists can detour to Kamehameha Avenue.

Electronic message signs are posted.

A portion of Māmalahoa Highway, or Highway 11, in Nāʻālehu also will be closed 1 hour July 4 to accommodate the Nāʻālehu Independence Day Parade.

The full closure is slated for 11:55 a.m. to 12:55 p.m. between Niu Street and Kaʻalāiki Road. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes and plan ahead.

Electronic message signs are posted. Hawaiʻi Police Department personnel also will be on scene to assist traffic control.
