UPDATE: Flood advisory canceled for portions of Kaʻū, Puna

Update at 5:51 a.m. March 11, 2026: The flood advisory for portions of Puna and Kaʻū that was previously issued until 6:30 a.m. has been canceled.

National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu report radar shows that heavy rainfall diminished and flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat.

Story originally posted at 3:36 a.m. March 11, 2026: National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu issued a flood advisory until 6:30 a.m. today (March 11) for eastern and southern portions of the Big Island because of expected flooding caused by excessive rainfall.

Radar indicated at 3:18 a.m. that periods of heavy rain were falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour over Kaʻū and Puna along the southeast slopes of the the island.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Wood Valley, Pāhala, Volcano, Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, Kawa Flats, Glenwood, Mountain View, Nāʻālehu, Hawaiian Acres, Orchidland Estates, Pāhoa, Keaʻau, Hawaiian Ocean View, Fern Forest, Eden Roc, Fern Acres and Waiʻōhinu.

Minor flooding is expected on roads and in poor drainage areas and streams, as well as water over roadways. Some low-water crossings could become impassable.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

The public is advised to not cross fast-flowing or rising water in their vehicles or on
foot.
