Severe weather possible in Hawaiʻi as Kona storm approaches islands

Forecasters say a developing Kona storm could bring heavy rain, strong winds, and possible severe thunderstorms to Hawaiʻi later this week.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu said the storm system could begin affecting the western end of the state as early as Tuesday, March 10, with conditions deteriorating across the islands by Wednesday, according to the press release.

Meteorologists added that flash flooding is a primary concern, particularly in areas prone to runoff or with already saturated ground. Weather officials are urging residents to monitor forecasts and prepare for possible flooding conditions.

National Weather Service forecasters also say strong to severe thunderstorms could develop on Wednesday, bringing the potential for damaging winds and isolated large hail, especially across the western half of the state.

The unsettled weather pattern may persist into late week, bringing another, stronger round of thunderstorms and damaging Kona winds on Friday the 13th and into the weekend.
