A 39-year-old Puna man faces an array of firearms and abuse charges after a woman walked into the Hilo Police Station earlier this week and said he allegedly threw a bowl at her, striking her in the forehead and hurting her, and feared for her safety after a domestic argument between the two of them.

Joshua Allen Sheen

Hawaiʻi Island police on Tuesday charged Joshua Allen Sheen of Kurtistown with:

  • Abuse of a family or household member.
  • Second-degree terroristic threatening.
  • Three counts of ownership or possession firearm prohibited.
  • Two counts of ownership or possession ammunition prohibited.
  • Two counts of mandatory registration of a firearm.
  • Possession of prohibited weapons.
  • Alteration of identification marks prohibited.
  • Third-degree promoting a detrimental drug.

Sheen’s bail was set at $290,000. His initial court appearance was scheduled Wednesday afternoon in Hilo District Court.

The charges against Sheen stem from an incident Monday morning, when a 29-year-old woman walked into the Hilo Police Station and reported being involved in an earlier domestic argument in which Sheen allegedly threw a bowl at her, striking her forehead and causing her pain.

Sheen reportedly threatened to harm her and damage her property as well, leading her to fear for her safety.

The woman also said Sheen possesses unregistered firearms at their 38th Avenue residence in Kurtistown, and police later determined Sheen is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.

Sheen was arrested without incident at about 10:40 a.m. Monday when he walked into the Pāhoa Police Station to speak with an officer about an unrelated matter.

Officers recovered Sheen’s vehicle as evidence during his arrest after seeing what appeared to be a glass smoking pipe and marijuana inside.

A search warrant was executed Monday night at the residence in Kurtistown, where detectives recovered two unregistered rifles and an altered shotgun, later determined to have been stolen in an unrelated incident. Additionally, 530 rounds of .22-caliber ammunition and 30 rounds of 20-gauge shotgun ammunition were seized.

A search warrant was also executed Tuesday morning on Sheen’s vehicle, in which 10.07 grams of processed marijuana was recovered.

Hawaiʻi Police Department detectives continue to investigate the stolen shotgun and will refer the case to the Hawaiʻi County prosecutor’s office when that investigation is complete.
