Update: Both lanes on Waikōloa Road reopen following brush fire
6:43 a.m. Saturday update: Waikōloa Road is open.
The road was previously closed between Route 190 and Paniolo Avenue as crews addressed the brush fire located on the south (Kona) side of the roadway just makai of Route 190.
No structures were threatened. The blaze was smoldering Friday night and not progressing.
9:11 p.m. update: Hawai‘i Fire officials report a brush fire burning in Kohala has scorched about 20 acres.
Dozers are on scene and the fire is smoldering, there is no active fire. At this time, the blaze isn’t getting bigger at the moment.
No structures are threatened and crews hope to have a line around it tonight.
7:30 p.m. update: Both lanes are closed on Waikoloa Road between Route 190 and the Paniolo Avenue intersection, according to the Hawai‘i Police Department, as crews position equipment for a brush fire.
Police advise the public to avoid the area and use Kawaihae Road as an alternate route.
Highway 11 Queen Ka‘ahumanu is open to Waikoloa Village, according to the Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Agency.
Original post: One lane is closed on Waikoloa Road near the 10-11 MM just below Route 190 on the Big Island, according to the Hawai‘i Police Department, due to a brush fire on the south side of the road.
Police advise the public to avoid the area and use alternate routes. Emergency crews and vehicles are working in the area.
