Police identified the 51-year-old man who died May 2 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash in Puna as Rikko J. Von Gato of Pahoa.

Von Gato was driving a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle west on Leilani Avenue when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with Highway 130.

The rider went through the intersection, onto a private driveway and struck a gate.

Although police do not consider it an official traffic fatality because it occurred on private property, the death was the fifth involving motorcycle riders so far this year on the Big Island.
