UH-Hilo Women’s Volleyball to Open PacWest Conference Slate
It’s back to the court this weekend for the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo women’s volleyball team, which opens Pacific West Conference play with back-to-back home matches in Hilo against in-state rivals Hawai‘i Pacific University and Chaminade University of Honolulu.
The Vulcans take on Hawai‘i Pacific at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. The Sharks enter the game with a record of 0-7. UH-Hilo then faces off against Chaminade at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11. The Silverswords come into Sunday’s bout with a 6-6 record.
The Vulcans enter the weekend after a two-week layoff following a 0-6 non-conference run against the likes of No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino, No. 16 Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Fairbanks — all of which appeared in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association coaches poll.

This weekend’s games also mark the beginning of the defense of UH-Hilo’s title as winner of the 2021-22 PacWest Hawai‘i Challenge.
The Vulcans won the competition last year for the first time since the reintroduction of the challenge in 2015. With the omission of the 2020-21 school year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hawai‘i Pacific had won the last five years in a row with a co-championship claim with Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i in the first year.
The PacWest Hawai‘i Challenge is comprised of nine sports in which all three of the state’s Division II schools participate: women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s tennis, men’s golf and softball.
Points are awarded in head-to-head matchups in basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball. For women’s cross country, men’s golf and women’s tennis, points are award in the order of finish at the PacWest Championships.
