Hawai‘i Community College and the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo are offering a variety of free in-person and virtual activities throughout the month in honor of Earth Day 2022. Lā Honua Earth Month activities will include opportunities to embark on huaka‘i (journeys, trips) at locations around the island and participate in virtual symposiums.

“Hawaiʻi Community College and the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo have a long standing tradition of celebrating Lā Honua Earth Day Fair with local K-12 students,” said Lā Honua Earth Month organizers in a press release. “This year, we are offering six huakaʻi, a virtual symposium made up of 12 sessions, and school garden work days at six different Hawaiʻi Island schools. We encourage teachers and ‘ohana to connect K-12 students with the values of mālama ʻāina through these events.”

Huaka‘i began April 2 and continue on several dates throughout April. The virtual symposium sessions begin Thursday, April 7, and will cover a range of topics, including protecting native species, highlighting sustainable local business and getting involved with local activism.
