Flood Advisory Issued for East Hawaiʻi

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for a portion of the Big Island.

The advisory is in effect until 8:45 p.m. today, March 8, for East Hawaiʻi. Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Keaʻau, Pāpaʻikou, Mountain View, Hawaiian Acres, Pepeʻekeo, Orchidlands Estates, Glenwood, Honomū, Hakalau, Volcano, Nīnole, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Wainaku, Paukaʻa, Kurtistown, Fern Acres and Eden Roc.

At 5:37 p.m. Tuesday, radar indicated heavy rain and a thunderstorm over the eastern slopes of the Big Island. Rain was falling at a rate of up to 2 inches per hour. Residents in the affected areas can expect minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas and in streams.

The NWS advises residents in the area to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone
to flooding.

This advisory might need to be extended if flooding persists.
