Hale Nani Halts Contraband Run

Hale Nani Reintegration Center halted an attempted contraband run on Saturday morning.

The Department of Public Safety reports that an inmate caused a dorm at the center to undergo lockdown when he was seen running out of a dorm and up a hillside.

Center corrections officers chased the inmate, identified as Sloan Deleon, calling his name in the woods.

Not long after, Deleon was reportedly seen further down the perimeter, running back to the dorm carrying a silver bag.

Deleon was then seen climbing into a window.

Staff members were called back from searching in the woods and a headcount at the facility’s dorm was conducted.

All inmates were accounted for and the silver bag seen in Deleon’s possession was recovered.

The bag contained candy, tobacco, and what authorities say appeared to be marijuana.

DPS says that the lockdown at the center was lifted around 1 p.m.

The contraband situation is being investigated, and Deleon was transported to the Hawai’i Community Correctional Center.

Deleon could face contraband possession-related charges, as well as attempted escape for leaving the dorm without being authorized.

He is serving time for Theft 2 and Prohibited Acts Related to Drug Paraphernalia

“I commend our staff for their fast work in identifying the individual who tried to bring in contraband and for locating the contraband quickly and efficiently,” said Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda. “Staff did everything they were trained to do.”

Deleon is a community custody inmate, which is the lowest classification status.
