Honolulu Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Tom Simon says there is currently no known credible terrorist threat targeting Hawai’i or the Pacific in the wake of a recent terrorist attack in Belgium.

The incidents occurred during the early commute hours in Belgium on Tuesday, which was Monday night Hawai’i time.

Two explosions took place in the departure hall of Brussels Airport in Zaventem, Belgium, a commuting hub not only important to Belgium, but also a main hub for European travel.

Just over an hour later, another explosion took place on the rail track at the Maelbeek subway station.

Several fatalities have been announced, although the actual number confirmed by various media outlets varies, some have the death toll at over 30.

In addition, numerous injuries have been reported. That number has not been set to a specific number due to the nature of the attacks.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks, claiming on an ISIS-affiliated website that it “carried out a series of bombings with explosive belts and devices.”

The attacks occurred in “a country participating in the international coalition against the Islamic State,” according to the website.

“Our Joint Terrorism Task Force is closely monitoring the situation in Brussels, and the FBI remains in contact with our counterparts in the region,” said Agent Simon. “The public is reminded to remain vigilant and be aware of their surroundings. Anyone can report suspicious activity to the Honolulu FBI at 808-566-4300.”
