Australian Artist Brings Street Art to Hilo

Australian artist David “MEGGS” Hooke recently brought some of his international artistry to the streets of downtown Hilo.

Hooke was called on by the owner of Oasis Skateboards, Dan Madsen, to complete an 800-square foot mural on the back wall of the skate shop’s new location on Kinoole St.

With the idea of providing an inclusive look at both the Big Island and skate culture, Hooke put his creative mind to work.

The six-day project presented an opportunity for Hooke, who said he believes Hilo could use more public art.

“It’s a good feeling when people respond positively in the community,” Hooke said, after noting that he received many positive community comments about the work. “Hilo doesn’t have a lot of street art, so it definitely stands out. The fact that people are stoked on it is great and I’m motivated for some future plans to contribute other art activations in 2016.

Hooke resides in Los Angeles and is perhaps known best for his art style that combine pop culture references, the natural work, and socio-cultural issues.

Both street art and gallery work completed by Hooke have been featured across the globe.
