The Big Island will soon have a Mobile Slaughter Unit. Following a four-year planning period, the MSU will arrive on the island on Nov. 2.

Commercial operations of the MSU will begin in 2016, bringing United States Department of Agriculture-inspected slaughter services directly to small and mid-scale producers and regional processing sites around the Big Island.

Hawai’i Island Meat Cooperative will host two events, one on Sunday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 21 in Kealakekua and Hilo.

Livestock producers of pigs, sheep, goats, and cattle are invited to tour the MSU, learn more about the HIMC, and apply for membership at two upcoming Membership Drive BBQs.

Consumers are also invited to learn about HIMC and where to find products produced through the cooperative.

The Nov. 15 event will be at the Kona Historical Society in Kealakekua and Nov. 21 at the Komohana Research Extension Center in Hilo. Both events are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

HIMC board members will provide roasted pig and chili, made from their own meats. Attendees are welcome to bring a side, salad, dessert, or drink to share.
