‘Suspicious Package’ Closed Hilo Post Office Monday

A United States Postal Service officials tells Big Island Now that the Hilo Post Office was temporarily closed Monday afternoon and into the evening as a result of a suspicious package.

At 4:15 p.m., an unattended package was found in the facility’s retail lobby.

The Hawai’i Police Department and Hawai’i County Fire Department responded to the scene, where the package was determined not to be a threat.

According to the USPS, the Post Office, located along Kekuanaoa Street, reopened to the public at 6:30 p.m.
